I was extremely busy during the end of the semester so I only had time to watch 3 Generations (2015), a remarkable story about identity and family. Director Gaby Dellal tells the dramatic story of Elle Fanning (Young Ones), a transgender teen who is about to start the process of transitioning from female to male. The filmmaker highlights the fears and insecurities of the protagonist’s mother, splendidly played by Naomi Watts (While We're Young), as well as the traditional point of view of a charming and unusual lesbian grandmother, played by Susan Sarandon (Peacock). Dellal focuses on the daily lives of this dysfunctional family, showing how this girl needs to turn into a boy and what this entails in terms of discrimination and bullying, thus humanizing a struggle that we can all identify with. Because in the end what matters the most isn’t the fact that those who were born as females can become males, but rather the factors and the motivations behind that decision, as well as the repercussions it might have on the parents and the immediate family. 3 Generations is an intense film, full of emotion, honesty and a vitality that only an independent production could achieve; there are so many breathtaking scenes that it’s impossible not to sit back and reflect on all of it afterwards.

Time’s but a veiled screen, whereon our silhouettes fatten then grow lean. Another year has come and gone in this on-line journal and that indubitably calls forth a proper measure of our cinematographic experiences. Now let us be about our grudging rounds. Speak well, oh reader, and listen even better, for we have enough wit yet left to surprise thee. It is proposed we should find positions for all motion pictures presented in the course of 2013, and with an agile mind and knowledge both of directors and actors, we trust thou shalt count our judgment amongst the very best. Thus must we testify... sufficient in our intimate thoughts that these estimations spilled delinquent out of our mouths are indeed of the noblest disposition.

Estuve muy ocupado durante el final del semestre, así que sólo tuve tiempo de ver 3 Generations (2015), una notable historia sobre la identidad y la familia. La directora Gaby Dellal cuenta la dramática historia de Elle Fanning  (Young Ones), una adolescente transgénero que está por comenzar el proceso de transición de mujer a hombre. La cineasta destaca los miedos e inseguridades de la madre de la protagonista, espléndidamente interpretada por Naomi Watts (While We're Young), así como el punto de vista tradicional de una encantadora e inusual abuela lesbiana, interpretada por Susan Sarandon (Peacock). Dellal se enfoca en la vida cotidiana de esta familia disfuncional, mostrando la manera en que esta chica necesita convertirse en un chico y lo que esto implica en términos de discriminación y abuso, humanizando así una lucha con la que todos podemos identificarnos. Porque al final lo que más importa no es el hecho de que aquellos que nacieron como mujeres puedan convertirse en hombres, sino más bien los factores y las motivaciones detrás de esa decisión, así como las repercusiones que podría tener en los padres y la familia inmediata. 3 Generations es una película intensa, llena de emoción, honestidad y una vitalidad propia de una producción independiente, y con tantas escenas impresionantes que es imposible no sentarse para reflexionar al final.

El tiempo no es sino un delgado velo, sobre él nuestras siluetas se abultan o aligeran. Otro año va y viene en este atormentado blog y ello indudablemente merece que sopesemos apropiadamente nuestras experiencias cinematográficas. Que sea así, por ende, y dejadnos girar el torno y la rueda. Hablad, oh lectores, y escuchad bien, puesto que aún nos resta suficiente ingenio para sorprenderos. Se ha propuesto que debíamos encontrar posiciones para todas las imágenes en movimiento presentadas en el transcurso del 2012, y con mente ágil y conocimientos tanto en materia de directores como de actores, confiamos en que vosotros incluiréis nuestro juicio entre los mejores. Aqueste es nuestro testimonio... suficiente en nuestro pensamiento íntimo que estas apreciaciones, desparramadas al alimón, sean de la más noble disposición.

Superman: Distant Fires - Howard Chaykin, Gil Kane & Kevin Nowlan

As it usually happens, stories about alternative timelines, especially those about post-apocalyptic futures, tend to be quite popular. The idea of a nuclear conflict and the destruction of our world has been explored in comics and films many times. And in this Elseworlds graphic novel, Howard Chaykin’s proposal is a nuclear war that Superman is not be able to prevent. Despite having so much power, even the Man of Steel is helpless before the massive destruction caused by atomic bombs dropped all over the surface of the planet. And that is how “Distant Fires” begins.

Legendary artist Gil Kane is the penciler of “Distant Fires”, and this was one of his last works. Kane worked for Marvel and DC, illustrating the adventures of the most famous superheroes. He always had a very particular style, his elegant lines and his special ability to create dynamic sequences turned him into a respected and beloved artist. Kevin Nowlan inks Kane’s pencils, and his sober approach perfectly complements the lines of the veteran illustrator.

“Just a few days ago I could see everything... hear everything. Today the silence of the empty, dead city is deafening [...] as far as I know, I'm it. The sole survivor of a holocaust... for the second time in my life”, whispers a defeated Superman. In the opening sequence, Superman buries the body of Lois Lane next to the improvised graves of Perry White and Jimmy Olsen. Metropolis is now in ruins, covered by bodies and radiation. In this unlikely scenario, Superman wanders around the lifeless city, slowly losing his mind and talking to himself, remembering a past that seemed to be so bright and promising. 

There is nothing left in the city for Superman so he decides to walk away from it. For him this is a long journey with no clear goal in mind. It will take him days at first, and then weeks, and then months, but finally he will run into one of his old colleagues: the Amazonian Warrior known as Wonder Woman. It’s only fitting that two of the most powerful superheroes would be able to survive a nuclear fallout.

Wonder Woman takes Superman to the last remains of civilization: a small village in which all the surviving superheroes and villains have been gathered. And things have changed: those who were evil in the past now seem to be peaceful members of this new society and some of those who were the greatest heroes are now angry and bitter men, and have embraced a newfound darkness. All of this is made evident when J’onn J’onzz, the Martian Manhunter, is ridiculed for his peaceful statements by no other than Billy Batson, AKA Captain Marvel.

Metropolis

Even in this fragmented society, Superman still has hope, and so he marries Wonder Woman. They have a son and they name him Bruce (after Bruce Wayne, the Batman). Living in a society without enemies should be everyone's dream, however the political differences turn old allies into rivals.

“I worry about Batson. We were never close in the old days... And I've always felt, behind that friendly smile... that he concealed a mountain of resentment for me”, explains Superman. And that’s true; in fact, Mark Waid used this rivalry as the narrative foundation for Kingdom Come, another Elseworld’s tale in which Superman and Captain Marvel fight each other to the death.

Superman, Wonder Woman & Flash

In Chaykin’s story, Captain Marvel is a man consumed by jealousy and also a traitor. He murders Wonder Woman in cold blood and he uses Shazam’s magical powers in such a way that the planet’s core becomes unstable and is now about to blow up. Although for some readers, the final confrontation is anti-climatic maybe Chaykin wanted to do that on purpose. Because the outcome of the battle is irrelevant, what matters the most is that Earth is doomed: “And I know now, I survived the Holocaust so that I could become my father”, affirms Superman while he sends his only son in a spaceship to a faraway galaxy.

Como suele suceder, las historias sobre líneas temporales alternativas, especialmente aquellas sobre futuros post-apocalípticos, tienden a ser bastante populares. La idea de un conflicto nuclear y la destrucción de nuestro mundo se ha explorado en comics y películas muchas veces. Y en esta novela gráfica del sello Elseworld, la propuesta de Howard Chaykin es una guerra nuclear que Superman no podrá evitar. A pesar de tener tanto poder, incluso el Hombre de Acero es impotente ante la destrucción masiva causada por las bombas atómicas que caen sobre la superficie del planeta. Y así es como comienza “Fuegos distantes”.

The death of Wonder Woman / la muerte de Wonder Woman

El legendario artista Gil Kane es el dibujante de “Distant Fires”, y esta fue una de sus últimas obras. Kane trabajó para Marvel y DC, ilustrando las aventuras de los superhéroes más famosos. Siempre tuvo un estilo muy particular, sus líneas elegantes y su capacidad especial para crear secuencias dinámicas lo convirtieron en un artista respetado y apreciado. Kevin Nowlan entinta los lápices de Kane, y su enfoque sobrio complementa perfectamente las líneas del veterano ilustrador.

Remembering the dead / recordando a los muertos

"Hace apenas unos días podía verlo todo... escucharlo todo. Hoy el silencio de la ciudad vacía y muerta es ensordecedor [...] por lo que sé, soy el único. El único superviviente de un holocausto... por segunda vez en mi vida", susurra un Superman derrotado. En la secuencia inicial, Superman entierra el cuerpo de Lois Lane junto a las tumbas improvisadas de Perry White y Jimmy Olsen. Metrópolis está ahora en ruinas, cubierta de cadáveres y radiación. En este escenario poco probable, Superman deambula por la ciudad sin vida, perdiendo la cabeza lentamente y hablando consigo mismo, recordando un pasado que parecía ser tan brillante y prometedor.

No queda nada en la ciudad para Superman, por eso decide marcharse. Para él, este es un largo viaje sin un objetivo claro en mente. Le tomará días al principio, y luego semanas, y luego meses, pero finalmente se encontrará con una de sus viejas colegas: el guerrero amazónico conocido como la Mujer Maravilla. Es lógico que dos de los superhéroes más poderosos puedan sobrevivir a una lluvia nuclear.

Superman versus Captain Marvel

Wonder Woman lleva a Superman a los últimos restos de la civilización: un pequeño pueblo en el que se han reunido todos los superhéroes y villanos supervivientes. Y las cosas han cambiado: aquellos que fueron malvados en el pasado ahora parecen ser miembros pacíficos de esta nueva sociedad y algunos de los que fueron los héroes más reconocidos ahora son hombres decepcionados y amargados, y han adoptado una nueva oscuridad. Todo esto se hace evidente cuando J'onn J'onzz, el cazador marciano, es ridiculizado por sus pacíficas declaraciones nada menos que por Billy Batson, también conocido como el Capitán Marvel.

Incluso en esta sociedad fragmentada, Superman todavía tiene esperanza, por lo que se casa con Wonder Woman. Tienen un hijo y lo llaman Bruce (en honor a Bruce Wayne, Batman). Vivir en una sociedad sin enemigos debería ser el sueño de todos, sin embargo, las diferencias políticas convierten a los viejos aliados en rivales.

Earth's last survivor / el último superviviente de la Tierra

"Me preocupa Batson. Nunca fuimos cercanos en los viejos tiempos... Y siempre sentí, detrás de esa sonrisa amistosa... que me ocultaba una montaña de resentimiento", explica Superman. Y eso es verdad; de hecho, Mark Waid utilizó esta rivalidad como la base narrativa de Kingdom Come, otra historia de Elseworld en la que Superman y el Capitán Marvel luchan hasta la muerte.

En la historia de Chaykin, el Capitán Marvel es un hombre consumido por los celos y también un traidor. Él asesina a Wonder Woman a sangre fría y usa los poderes mágicos de Shazam de tal manera que el núcleo del planeta se vuelve inestable y está a punto de explotar. Aunque para algunos lectores la confrontación final es anti-climática, tal vez Chaykin quería que fuese así a propósito. Debido a que el resultado de la batalla es irrelevante, lo que más importa es que la Tierra está condenada: "Y sé que sobreviví al Holocausto para poder convertirme en mi padre", afirma Superman mientras envía a su único hijo en una nave espacial en dirección a una galaxia lejana.

2017 Comic Books: Arion's Achievement Awards

Even as a busy grad student, I always find time to read comics. So every month, I’m always impatient to read something I haven’t read before or to re-read something that has been reprinted and that had been out of reach for a long time. One way or another, reading comics continues to be an important part of my life.

Like a treasure hunter, I always look for the best available titles. The selection process begins early. In fact, two months prior to the date I place my order, I’m already checking out solicitations and choosing what seems to be more promising. Then I read everything I buy and I keep in mind which titles have captivated me the most. Finally, I share my opinions with you at the end of the year, as I’m doing right now. So, without further ado, I invite you all to the seventh annual edition of the AAA (Arion's Achievement Awards).

There is power in words, there is power in sentences. Thanks to a writer’s imagination we can travel to different worlds and eras; good writing allows us to be anywhere we want. In my opinion the 2017 award for best writer should be shared by three extraordinary authors: Kurt Busiek, for his deeply touching and sophisticated “Astro City”; Peter Milligan for his irreverent “Kid Lobotomy”, a series that reminds us of the best Vertigo era; and Ales Kot for his innovative “Generation Gone”.

If comics can be a superior medium is because of the art. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and the logic outcome of this precept is that an artist is more valuable than anyone else: only he knows how to turn a page into a powerful visual feast, complex and captivating. I must confess that my eyes were seduced by the lines and designs of three artists: Santiperez for his exceptional work in the pages of “Diablo House”, influenced by masters like Bernie Wrightson, his drawings are a joy to behold; Pablo Raimondi for all his fantastic pages in “Sacred Creatures”; and finally Raulo Caceres for his detailed and splendid pages in “Code Pru” (in Cinema Purgatorio).  

Covers are designed to grab the reader’s attention. They can be beautiful and seductive, or visceral and impressive or simply unconventional. Either way, with hundreds of comics published each month, a cover needs to shine. The most magnificent covers of 2017 were done by Frank Quitely (“Kid Lobotomy”), Glenn Fabry (“American Gods”) and Santiperez (“Diablo House”).

Editors don’t usually get as much credit as they deserve, but they are an essential part of the publishing process. This time the award goes to Molly Mahan, for contributing to Vertigo’s greatest ongoing series: “Astro City”.

I read so many comics each year that sometimes it can be difficult to keep track of them. Fortunately, some of them stay with me long after I’ve finished reading them. The best single issue I read in 2017 is Astro City # 48, for someone who loves dogs as much as I do, this was the saddest story I could think of, and also an example of why, after more than two decades, Busiek continues to be one of the best writers ever.

When I started reading American Gods, I knew where it came from. Now I really want to read the novel and watch the TV series. Many of Gaiman’s ideas that were explored in Sandman are present here. Because of that and many other reasons, it deserves to win as best ongoing title of 2017.

There were plenty of amazing miniseries such as “Diablo House”, “Kid Lobotomy”, “Generation Gone” and “Sacred Creatures”. Nonetheless, the best limited series of 2017 is “Unworthy Thor”.

I always have high expectations whenever I read a new series. “Marvel-Two-In-One”, “Astonishing X-Men” and “The Shaolin Cowboy: Who’ll Stop the Reign” were all great. But there can be only one winner: I consider that “Batman: Creature of the Night” is the best new series of 2017; writer Kurt Busiek and artist John Paul Leon have created a fascinating universe, and they deserve a round of applause.

When Alpha Flight was originally released in the 80s it was a hit. Finally, Marvel decided to publish a new edition of John Byrne’s Canadian superheroes. Certainly, this is my favorite acquisition of 2017.

After evaluating several publishers, I’ve decided to reward IDW for all the superb titles they’ve been publishing lately (“Strange Fruit”, “Kid Lobotomy”, “Diablo House”, etc.).

There are always many interesting sites devoted to the 9th art. In 2017 http://sequart.org/ proved why it is so “devoted to the study of popular culture and the promotion of comic books as a legitimate artform”.

Talent never dies. That’s why, in 2017, we remember three extraordinary men who dedicated their lives to produce the most amazing comics: Bernie Wrightson was the most talented artist of his generation, who influenced so many people and became such a beacon of excellence and a master of horror storytelling. I’ve been an admirer of his work since I started reading comics. He will be missed dearly. Legendary writer Len Wein, who co-created Swamp Thing along with Wrightson, also passed away; respected and admired by many, now he’s mostly remembered as the creator of characters like Wolverine. Finally, British author Leo Baxendale leaves behind a unique legacy: “According to the comic writer Alan Moore, who read his work in the Beano as a child, Baxendale was the reason British comics creators made waves in America during the 1980s”.

No importa lo ocupado que esté con la maestría, siempre encuentro tiempo para leer cómics. Así que cada mes, estoy siempre impaciente por leer algo que no he leído antes o por releer algo que ha sido reimpreso o que había sido difícil de encontrar por mucho tiempo. De un modo u otro, leer cómics continúa siendo una parte importante de mi vida.

Como un buscador de tesoros, siempre estoy pendiente de los mejores títulos. El proceso de selección empieza temprano. De hecho, con dos meses de anticipación, ya estoy revisando las solicitaciones y eligiendo lo que parece ser más prometedor. Hay poder en las palabras, hay poder en las frases. Gracias a la imaginación de un escritor, podemos viajar a diferentes mundos y épocas; una buena escritura nos permite estar en cualquier lugar que deseemos. En mi opinión, el premio del 2017 al mejor escritor debería ser compartido por tres autores extraordinarios: Kurt Busiek, por su profundamente conmovedora y sofisticada “Astro City”; Peter Milligan por su irreverente “Kid Lobotomy”, una serie que nos recuerda la mejor época de Vertigo; y Ales Kot por su innovadora “Generation Gone”.

Si los cómics pueden ser un medio superior es por el arte. Dicen que una imagen vale más que mil palabras, y el resultado lógico de este precepto es que un artista es más valioso que cualquier otra persona: solo él sabe cómo convertir una página en un poderoso festín visual, complejo y cautivador. Debo confesar que mis ojos fueron seducidos por las líneas y los diseños de tres artistas: Santiperez por su excepcional trabajo en las páginas de “Diablo House”, influenciado por maestros como Bernie Wrightson, sus dibujos se disfrutan mucho; Pablo Raimondi por todas sus fantásticas páginas en “Sacred Creatures”; y finalmente Raulo Cáceres por sus detalladas y espléndidas páginas en “Code Pru” (en Cinema Purgatorio).

Las portadas están diseñadas para captar la atención del lector. Pueden ser hermosas y seductoras, viscerales e impresionantes o simplemente no convencionales. De cualquier manera, con cientos de cómics publicados cada mes, una portada debe destacar. Las portadas mejor logradas del 2017 fueron hechas por Frank Quitely (“Kid Lobotomy”), Glenn Fabry (“American Gods”) y Santiperez (“Diablo House”).

Los editores generalmente no obtienen el crédito que merecen, pero son una parte esencial del proceso de publicación. Esta vez, el premio recae en Molly Mahan, por su contribución a la principal serie de Vertigo: “Astro City”.

Leo tantos cómics cada año que a veces puede ser difícil hacer un seguimiento. Afortunadamente, algunos de ellos se quedan conmigo mucho después de que he terminado de leerlos. El mejor cómic que leí en el 2017 es Astro City # 48, para alguien que ama a los perros tanto como yo, esta fue la historia más triste que podría imaginar, y también un ejemplo de por qué, después de más de dos décadas, Busiek continúa siendo uno de los mejores escritores.

Cuando comencé a leer American Gods, sabía de dónde venía. Ahora realmente quiero leer la novela y ver la serie de televisión. Muchas de las ideas de Gaiman, que fueron exploradas en Sandman, están presentes aquí. Por eso y por muchas otras razones, merece ganar como mejor serie mensual del 2017.

Frank Quitely

Hubo muchas miniseries increíbles como “Diablo House”, “Kid Lobotomy”, “Generation Gone” y “Sacred Creatures”. No obstante, la mejor serie limitada del 2017 es “Unworthy Thor”.

Siempre tengo grandes expectativas cada vez que leo un nuevo título. “Marvel-Two-In-One”, “Astonishing X-Men” y “The Shaolin Cowboy: Who'll Stop the Reign” fueron estupendos. Pero sólo puede haber un ganador: considero que “Batman: Creature of the Night” es la mejor nueva serie del 2017; el escritor Kurt Busiek y el artista John Paul Leon han creado un universo fascinante, y merecen una ronda de aplausos.

Cuando Alpha Flight fue lanzado originalmente en los 80s fue un éxito. Finalmente, Marvel decidió publicar una nueva edición de los superhéroes canadienses de John Byrne. Sin duda, esta es mi adquisición favorita del 2017.

Después de evaluar a varias editoriales, he decidido recompensar a IDW por todos los soberbios títulos que han publicado últimamente (“Strange Fruit”, “Kid Lobotomy”, “Diablo House”, etc.).

El talento nunca muere. Por eso, en el 2017, recordamos a tres hombres extraordinarios que dedicaron sus vidas a producir los cómics más sorprendentes: Bernie Wrightson fue el artista más talentoso de su generación, que influyó en muchísimas personas y se convirtió en un ícono de excelencia y un maestro del género de terror. He sido un admirador de su trabajo desde que comencé a leer comics. Lo extrañaremos mucho. El legendario escritor Len Wein, que co-creó Swamp Thing junto con Wrightson, también falleció; respetado y admirado por muchos, ahora es recordado como el creador de personajes como Wolverine. Finalmente, el autor británico Leo Baxendale deja un legado único: “Según el escritor de cómics Alan Moore, que leyó su trabajo en The Beano cuando era niño, Baxendale fue la razón por la cual los creadores de cómics británicos causaron tanto impacto en Estados Unidos durante la década de 1980”.
