December films / películas de diciembre

Happy New Year! I think a great way to celebrate the beginning of 2015 will be to combine December films with the Best of 2014 List. So let’s begin with The Hobbit: the Battle of the Five Armies (2014). As I’ve said before, Peter Jackson should’ve done just one movie instead of turning Tolkien’s smallest book into an unnecessary extensive trilogy. Anyway, this third part is the best one, in addition to some really amazing battle sequences, there are moments that reminded me how much I love the Lord of the Rings. Also, it was great to see top notch acting by the likes of Ian McKellen, Orlando Bloom, Cate Blanchett, Hugo Weaving, Christopher Lee, Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, Aidan Turner and Luke Evans.

Inefficiently directed and poorly written, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones (2013) was a real let down. Lily Collins joins a secret demon-hunting society, and falls in love with two boys: Jamie Campbell Bower (famous for his role in “Sweeney Todd”) and Robert Sheehan; Kevin Zegers (who had a great performance as a bisexual teen in “Transamerica”) is relegated to an irrelevant role as the token gay.

John Lee Hancock’s Saving Mr. Banks (2013) was a truly impressive biopic. Emma Thompson is PL Travers, author of the Mary Poppins books, and Tom Hanks is Walt Disney, a man obsessed with taking Mary Poppins to the big screen. Saving Mr. Banks is an extraordinary reconstruction of the painful memories of PL Travers, her childhood sufferings and her inability to come to terms with the loss of her father. I was deeply moved and completely shocked by the secret past of PL Travers. And Emma Thompson’s acting is absolutely exceptional.

Of course, out of curiosity, I just had to see Mary Poppins (1964), directed by Robert Stevenson. Julie Andrews is the governess that sings and dances with the Banks family. Dick Van Dyke and David Tomlinson also play protagonic roles. Although I’m not a fan of musicals, I really enjoyed this one (especially after watching “Saving Mr. Banks”). There are some truly memorable scenes, like the one that describes the greed of a banker who jeopardizes his financial empire only to get ‘tuppence’ from Mr. Banks son.

Rawson Marshall Thurber’s We’re the Millers (2013) is a hilarious comedy. Raunchy and risqué, this hysterical road trip follows the misadventures of Jason Sudeikis, Jennifer Aniston, Emma Roberts and Will Poulter, as they try to smuggle drugs from Mexico. Some of my favorite moments combine vulgarity with sexual situations (such as Will Poulter’s infamous genitalia scene or the semi lesbian encounters between Aniston and another woman). At moments I couldn’t stop laughing. That’s the best compliment I can think of.

(Untitled) (2009), directed by Jonathan Parker, reunites Adam Goldberg and Marley Shelton; he is an experimental musician with a dwindling fan base, and she is the owner of an art gallery, focusing on the most abstract and incomprehensible contemporary artists. What a subtle and yet brilliant critique to the ever subjective world of art! As money enters into the equation, the inexistence of artistic parameters is evident.

Written and directed by Nat Faxon and Jim Rash, The Way Way Back (2013) is one of the best coming of age productions I’ve seen in a while. Steve Carell and Toni Collette spend the summer together, but teenager Liam James isn’t happy seeing his mother dating a liar and an abusive man. The boy finds in Sam Rockwell, his boss, a real parental figure, someone who shows him how important it is to have good humor and to face life bravely. The Way Way Back has so many tender and heartwarming moments, I really recommend it.

Mark Thiedeman writes and directs Last Summer (2013), starring Samuel Pettit and Sean Rose, two high school friends who know each other since elementary school. Through the years, the friendship between the two boys has evolved into something else. Can homosexual love between teens take place in a small and conservative town? Last Summer is a fascinating character study, a dramatic exploration of the insecurities and passions of adolescence, and a bittersweet depiction of immaturity and teen love.

Written and directed by Rebecca Thomas, Electrick Children (2012) is a very interesting independent production that deals with religious zealots, isolation and incest. Julia Garner, a 15-year-old girl, leaves her hometown (a secluded place in which people live as if they were in the 19th century). She’s pregnant but she thinks that’s the result of a miracle. Accompanied by Liam Aiken and Rory Culkin, she’ll see the real world for the first time, and she’ll understand that there is no such thing as the immaculate conception.

Directed by George A. Romero and written by Stephen King, Creepshow (1982) is an extraordinary horror anthology, starring Leslie Nielsen, Ed Harris and Ted Danson. Horror and a healthy dose of black humor, turn these stories into unforgettable examples of narrative prowess. My favorites: the drowned couple who seeks revenge, the antediluvian creature who devours a pesky wife and the millionaire who is unable to fight against an invasion of cockroaches. A truly remarkable anthology and a must see for horror fans.

Director Robert Zemeckis created a classic with Back to the Future (1985). Michael J. Fox is a teenager who suddenly gains access to Christopher Lloyd’s time machine (a somewhat malfunctioning DeLorean). The young man is transported back to the 50s, and he meets his future father and mother. There are some really funny situations (like the underwear sequence or the incestuous jokes), and spectacular sequences. I’ve always loved time paradoxes, and Back to the Future fulfills all my expectations. I’m sure I’ll see it again.

And at last, but not least, I saw Jackie Brown (1997), written and directed by Quentin Tarantino. Pam Grier is a flight hostess who helps Samuel L. Jackson with his illegal operations. Until she comes up with a very clever plan to take half a million dollars and run away with it. Once again, Tarantino proves why he is one of the best American filmmakers, as he patiently creates a very real and sordid world in which money seems to be the only salvation. Unexpected plot twists and witty dialogs add interest to an already provocative proposal.

Time’s but a veiled screen, whereon our silhouettes fatten then grow lean. Another year has come and gone in this on-line journal and that indubitably calls forth a proper measure of our cinematographic experiences. Now let us be about our grudging rounds. Speak well, oh reader, and listen even better, for we have enough wit yet left to surprise thee. It is proposed we should find positions for all motion pictures presented in the course of 2014, and with an agile mind and knowledge both of directors and actors, we trust thou shalt count our judgment amongst the very best. Thus must we testify… sufficient in our intimate thoughts that these estimations spilled delinquent out of our mouths are indeed of the noblest disposition.

________________________________________________________________________________________________

Así que empecemos con "The Hobbit: the Battle of the Five Armies" (2014).

"The Way Way Back" tiene muchos momentos tiernos y reconfortantes, realmente la recomiendo.

El director Robert Zemeckis creó un clásico con "Back to the Future" (1985). Siempre me han gustado las paradojas temporales, y "Back to the Future" cumple con todas mis expectativas. Estoy seguro que la volveré a ver.
my drawing / mi dibujo

2014 Comic Books: Arion's Achievement Awards

Every time I get my box of comics I feel again like a wee lad in Christmas. It’s such a wonderful feeling. Even if I know exactly what I’ll find inside the box, it feels as if I were unwrapping a surprise present. So I open the box, I take out the comics. And I look at them and I smile. Yes, comics will always brighten up my day. I read at least 160 comics in 2014. That’s plenty of brightening up in my book.

Like a treasure hunter, I always look for the best available titles. The selection process begins early. In fact, two months prior to the date I place my order, I’m already checking out solicitations and choosing what seems to be more promising. Then I read everything I buy and I keep in mind which titles have captivated me the most. Finally, I share my opinions with you at the end of the year, as I’m doing right now. So, without further ado, I invite you all to the fourth annual edition of the AAA (Arion's Achievement Awards).

Someone said once that ideas can be more valuable than gold. Good ideas are, indeed, a rare and precious thing. Sometimes writers can spend entire decades chasing one good idea, the one that will put them on the spotlight, the one that will make them live eternally in the minds of the readers. 3 excellent writers are on my 2014 list: Yoshiyuki Sadamoto for his fascinating and intense final volume of Neon Genesis Evangelion, Jason Aaron for his memorable runs on “Thor: God of Thunder” and “Wolverine & The X-Men” and Al Ewing for his rather splendid “Loki: Agent of Asgard”.

Art is what turns comics into a superior form of narrative. Throughout the decades, pencilers and inkers have experimented with different styles and artistic approaches. But regardless of the year or the name of the artist, graphic quality has always been the most important component of the ninth art. 3 artists have exceled during the past 12 months, so it’s only fair to reward them appropriately: Geof Darrow for his extraordinary and inspiring “The Shaolin Cowboy”, Das Pastoras for his fantastic illustrations in “Thor: God of Thunder” and Jason Fabok for his outstanding contribution to “Detective Comics”.

When buying a comic, the first I thing I look at is the cover. The mission of the cover is to seduce the reader’s eyes. So it has to be attractive, it has to outshine all other covers, it has to persuade us to acquire the book. Drawing an eye-catching cover is no easy task. Luckily, there are artists that continue to amaze me with their output: Yuko Shimizu for the high quality level and thematic consistency of “The Unwritten”, Mukesh Singh for his remarkable efforts in “All-New Invaders” and Nick Bradshaw, for his delightful and charming work in “Wolverine & The X-Men”.

Editors must learn how to bring the best out of their creative teams, without interfering excessively. Editing can be a difficult process, and most of the times even when it’s done appropriately it goes unnoticed or unpraised. I would like to congratulate Lauren Sankovitch, for successfully editing “Young Avengers” (winner of the 2013 AAA for Best Ongoing Series).

This year I finally had the chance to read Alan Moore’s “From Hell”. It is the best graphic novel I’ve read in recent years. A true masterpiece that I need to reread again. However, faithful to the rules of the AAA, I can only choose material originally published in 2014. So the distinction for Best Single Issue goes to Detective Comics # 27, an extraordinary anniversary issue and an astonishing lineup of some of the industry’s most relevant authors.
Esad Ribic

Last year it was a strong competitor in this category. Now, it’s the winner. “Thor: God of Thunder” deserves to be praised as the Best Ongoing Series of 2014. Jason Aaron wrote some of the most meaningful and inventive tales about the Odinson, and marvelous artists like Esad Ribic and Das Pastoras graced the pages of this title with their beautiful illustrations.

When I first came across “Kick-Ass”, back in 2009, I had no idea what I had been missing. Mark Millar completely surprised me with this saga about a nerdy boy who decides to dress up as a superhero to fight against crime. Millar continued to offer us fresh new takes on the superhero genre. “Kick-Ass 3”, the last volume of this exceptional series, moved me in ways that I could not have anticipated. I cannot believe how connected I felt with all of it. “Kick-Ass 3” truly deserves as many trophies as possible. After all, it was the Best Limited Series of the year.

There were so many promising new series that I had a hard time making a selection. Titles as impressive as “Dead Boy Detectives”, “All-New Invaders”, “Loki: Agent of Asgard”, “Deadly Class”, “Moon Knight”, “Caliban”, “The Wicked + The Divine”, “Starlight”, “Silver Surfer” and “MPH” were in my list. However, in the end, I decided to choose “The Autumnlands: Tooth & Claw” as the Best New Series. Kurt Busiek has created a magical and fascinating new world.

The Last Temptation” is an unsung masterpiece. So I’m grateful to see Dynamite giving it the deluxe treatment it deserves. Without a shadow of a doubt, “The Last Temptation” gets the prize for Best Archival Collection / Reprint. This is one edition that I’ll treasure forever.

“This doesn’t bode well for Vertigo”, became a recurring phrase right after the departure of Karen Berger. Nevertheless, Vertigo has prospered beyond the pessimistic augurs of 2012. Some of my favorite titles such as “Sandman Overture”, “The Unwritten”, “The Wake” and “Astro City” come from this imprint. So that’s why I’m going against the trend and giving Vertigo the recognition it has earned as Best Publisher.
Dave McKean

I have posted there daily since 2009, making good friends in the process. I’ve laughed out loud with their whimsical and politically incorrect articles. I’ve supported their initiatives and I have celebrated their message boards for the past 5 years. I’m talking, of course, about TheOuthousers.com simply put: the Best Comics - Related Webpage!

“Ars longa, vita brevis” goes an old Latin saying. Art, indeed, can be everlasting even if our lives are doomed to end. In 2014 we say goodbye to several prominent creators: Steve Moore, a very respected British author, and a mentor for legendary writer Alan Moore. I’m familiar with Steve Moore’s stories for “2000AD”, and I was truly saddened when I read in the news that he was gone. Dick Ayers, was a very popular name in the silver age, he was famous for his work in the early days of Marvel Comics and was inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 2007. Finally, Jeremy Dale was the creator of the acclaimed title “Skyward” and a collaborator in “G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero”. Fans and followers were devastated when they found out that Jeremy was only 34 years old when he passed away.

I started this post explaining how I methodically and carefully choose what comics I get each month. However, no methodology can be 100% effective, so every now and then I get really bad comic books in my list. Reading “Avengers & X-Men: Axis” was a complete waste of my time (it’s hard to believe that the same Remender who wrote “Uncanny Avengers” also wrote this rubbish). This narrative disaster also has the ugliest drawings I’ve seen from Adam Kubert in decades. This was really the worst title of the year. The worst first issue also comes from Marvel, I’m talking about Winter Soldier: Bitter March # 1. Boring and with awful pencils, not even the cover saves this one. And the most disappointing project would be “Conan: People of the Black Circle”. This is the second time that a Dark Horse Conan title lets me down. Maybe it’s because I grew up reading Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith’s run on “Conan the Barbarian”, but the thing is that every time I try to get into Conan’s new material I find it absolutely abysmal.

And thus 2014 cometh to an end. Speak, speak now, reader. If thou art not as unkind as a Vaudeville villain then, by all means, unsheathe thy tongue. Thou shall not be arrested by modestly discourse, come forth and pray tell us what is on thy mind lest you wish to incur in the wrath of the keeper of this tavern, ensconced in yonder and ethereal realms.

I bid thee farewell and long live the ninth art!

Títulos tan llamativos como “Dead Boy Detectives”, “All-New Invaders”, “Loki: Agent of Asgard”, “Deadly Class”, “Moon Knight”, “Caliban”, “The Wicked + The Divine”, “Starlight”, “Silver Surfer” y “MPH” estaban en mi lista.
my drawing (final version) / mi dibujo (versión final)

The Last Temptation” es una obra maestra poco conocida.

Joe: A Real American Hero”.

Y el proyecto más decepcionante sería “Conan: People of the Black Circle”.
