We know the surface world, but the depths of the ocean remain unexplored. Who knows what dark creatures may be hidden down there? Marine biologist Lee Archer has devoted her career to investigate subaquatic life. And now she must travel to the Arctic Circle to conduct an important research. There she meets a group of scientists and scholars who have been recruited, just like her, by the Department of Homeland Security of the United States. What could possibly be considered a threat to national security? What’s all the secrecy about?
Perhaps we’ve all enjoyed reading about mysteries, arcane secrets and ancient legends. But what would happen if some of those myths were true? What would happen if a monstrous humanoid creature were found in the depths of the ocean? Lee Archer finds a subaquatic monstrosity, slightly similar to a mermaid, who has already mutilated a man.
Scott Snyder combines scientific facts about human and animal biology with our never-ending fascination towards unknown species. In only a handful of pages, Snyder creates suspense, and scratches the surface of fear aggressively. The message is clear: we’re not alone in this planet; we aren’t the only intelligent species on Earth.
And intelligence means to find a solution to a problem. For instance, escaping from a trap. And so this aquatic creature breaks free. And releases a neurotoxin that befuddles people’s minds. Unlike other horror stories, this ‘monster’ is not only a destructive beast, it has more than enough brainpower to subdue the entire station.
Lee Archer has a very vivid hallucination in which she thinks she’s seeing her son, but in reality she’s about to be attacked by the creature. She’s saved in the proverbial nick of time, but others are less fortunate.
As most people can’t react in time to the neurotoxin and find themselves trapped in a dream that feels stronger than reality. And it is in those moments that the creature devours them.
I have submerged myself into the bottom of the sea with the protagonists of “The Wake”. There is something fascinating about exploring territories that no one has seen before. Although water covers most of the Earth’s surface, we’ve barely started exploring the oceanic chasms. With a captivating narrative, Snyder recovers the mystery of the sea.
Of course, “The Wake” wouldn’t have been as impressive without Sean Murphy. If I made a list of young and/or new artists and had to choose only one as the best that would be Sean. His incredible talent and his unrivaled visual energy help him transform every one of his comic book projects into a ‘must have’.
I’ve been following Sean’s work since “Joe the Barbarian” and “Punk Rock Jesus”, and I always discover something new in his penciling and inking techniques. Fluid, rich and complex, Sean Murphy is the ideal illustrator of “The Wake”. He has created some truly fascinating designs, and his underwater monsters are more real and frightening than anything else on the stands.
Matt Hollingsworth, one of the best colorists of the industry, adds a special chromatic texture to Sean’s lines, applying color in small blots, generating the illusion of watching something painted with a mixture of crayons and oleo. The solid tones and the lack of artificial separations or effects (quite common in today’s comic books) create a unique and unforgettable atmosphere.

Lee Archer tiene una alucinación muy vívida en la que cree ver a su hijo, pero en realidad está a punto de ser atacada por la criatura. Se salva con las justas, pero otros no son tan afortunados.
