Trina Robbins in UWM

When I first saw Trina Robbins artwork in the pages of a Wonder Woman annual, back in the George Pérez’s era, I had no idea who she was. But I remember there was something special about her art that resonated in me.

Some years later, and after having seen quite a few documentaries about comics, I realized that Trina wasn’t just an artist, she was part of the underground movement of comic books, a social activist, a feminist and, coincidently, the first female artist to illustrate Wonder Woman comics and also the first author in America that had the courage to feature lesbian characters when it was still a taboo.

Although I never have time during the week to attend the multiple events organized by UWM, as soon as I stumbled upon the ad, next to the elevator in Curtin Hall, I immediately recognized her style. I have a pretty good memory when it comes to identifying artists just by looking at their drawings. And of course I decided to go.

Trina’s presentation took place today in the Golda Meir Library, at UWM, and it was a really interesting talk about the 9th art, about what it takes to be a creator and the historical role of women in the comic book industry. Trina was absolutely charming and funny, and she captivated the entire audience.

I love comics. I’ve always loved comics. And like I said to Trina during the reception, there is always new things and new authors to discover. Thanks to her I feel like I’ve learned about women in comics. This was a really special conference and the only thing I regret is that I didn’t have any book that she could’ve signed for me!

I’ve been extremely busy the past few weeks, but at least in September I managed to actually go to the movies twice. First, I went to the Union (which is free for all UWM students) and I saw Microbe et Gasoil (2015), an extraordinary coming of age tale that revolves around two ostracized boys (Ange Dargent and Théophile Baquet). The talented Michel Gondry delves deep into the minds of these adolescent misfits, constantly ostracized by their peers and consistently ignored or simply mistreated by their parents. The filmmaker plays with our expectations, challenging our own perception of what is and isn’t possible in the life of a couple of kids from Versailles. The first masturbatory experiences, the awkwardness of the first love, the insatiable curiosity about sex, and furthermore, the urgent need for adventure, will force the protagonists to build their own extravagant vehicle and abandon their respective homes, looking for an undefined and eternally unreachable adolescent dream. A masterpiece of contemporary French cinema, Microbe et Gasoil is definitely a must see.

Just a few days ago I also had a chance to go the Oriental Theatre with some of my colleagues (we got free tickets and I only had to walk one block to get there). Built as a “movie palace” in 1927, the Oriental Theatre has all the glamour of the past and the unique charm of the present, as it is currently participating in the Milwaukee Film Festival. I saw Ahora o nunca (2015), a very funny Spanish romantic comedy directed by Maria Ripoll. Although I don’t particularly enjoy this sort of productions, I must admit I got a few laughs out of it, and there were some moments that I really enjoyed.
