2014 Comic Books: Arion's Achievement Awards

Every time I get my box of comics I feel again like a wee lad in Christmas. It’s such a wonderful feeling. Even if I know exactly what I’ll find inside the box, it feels as if I were unwrapping a surprise present. So I open the box, I take out the comics. And I look at them and I smile. Yes, comics will always brighten up my day. I read at least 160 comics in 2014. That’s plenty of brightening up in my book.

Like a treasure hunter, I always look for the best available titles. The selection process begins early. In fact, two months prior to the date I place my order, I’m already checking out solicitations and choosing what seems to be more promising. Then I read everything I buy and I keep in mind which titles have captivated me the most. Finally, I share my opinions with you at the end of the year, as I’m doing right now. So, without further ado, I invite you all to the fourth annual edition of the AAA (Arion's Achievement Awards).

Chris Burnham
Someone said once that ideas can be more valuable than gold. Good ideas are, indeed, a rare and precious thing. Sometimes writers can spend entire decades chasing one good idea, the one that will put them on the spotlight, the one that will make them live eternally in the minds of the readers. 3 excellent writers are on my 2014 list: Yoshiyuki Sadamoto for his fascinating and intense final volume of Neon Genesis Evangelion, Jason Aaron for his memorable runs on “Thor: God of Thunder” and “Wolverine & The X-Men” and Al Ewing for his rather splendid “Loki: Agent of Asgard”.

Art is what turns comics into a superior form of narrative. Throughout the decades, pencilers and inkers have experimented with different styles and artistic approaches. But regardless of the year or the name of the artist, graphic quality has always been the most important component of the ninth art. 3 artists have exceled during the past 12 months, so it’s only fair to reward them appropriately: Geof Darrow for his extraordinary and inspiring “The Shaolin Cowboy”, Das Pastoras for his fantastic illustrations in “Thor: God of Thunder” and Jason Fabok for his outstanding contribution to “Detective Comics”.

When buying a comic, the first I thing I look at is the cover. The mission of the cover is to seduce the reader’s eyes. So it has to be attractive, it has to outshine all other covers, it has to persuade us to acquire the book. Drawing an eye-catching cover is no easy task. Luckily, there are artists that continue to amaze me with their output: Yuko Shimizu for the high quality level and thematic consistency of “The Unwritten”, Mukesh Singh for his remarkable efforts in “All-New Invaders” and Nick Bradshaw, for his delightful and charming work in “Wolverine & The X-Men”.

Editors must learn how to bring the best out of their creative teams, without interfering excessively. Editing can be a difficult process, and most of the times even when it’s done appropriately it goes unnoticed or unpraised. I would like to congratulate Lauren Sankovitch, for successfully editing “Young Avengers” (winner of the 2013 AAA for Best Ongoing Series).

This year I finally had the chance to read Alan Moore’s “From Hell”. It is the best graphic novel I’ve read in recent years. A true masterpiece that I need to reread again. However, faithful to the rules of the AAA, I can only choose material originally published in 2014. So the distinction for Best Single Issue goes to Detective Comics # 27, an extraordinary anniversary issue and an astonishing lineup of some of the industry’s most relevant authors.
Esad Ribic

Last year it was a strong competitor in this category. Now, it’s the winner. “Thor: God of Thunder” deserves to be praised as the Best Ongoing Series of 2014. Jason Aaron wrote some of the most meaningful and inventive tales about the Odinson, and marvelous artists like Esad Ribic and Das Pastoras graced the pages of this title with their beautiful illustrations.

When I first came across “Kick-Ass”, back in 2009, I had no idea what I had been missing. Mark Millar completely surprised me with this saga about a nerdy boy who decides to dress up as a superhero to fight against crime. Millar continued to offer us fresh new takes on the superhero genre. “Kick-Ass 3”, the last volume of this exceptional series, moved me in ways that I could not have anticipated. I cannot believe how connected I felt with all of it. “Kick-Ass 3” truly deserves as many trophies as possible. After all, it was the Best Limited Series of the year.

There were so many promising new series that I had a hard time making a selection. Titles as impressive as “Dead Boy Detectives”, “All-New Invaders”, “Loki: Agent of Asgard”, “Deadly Class”, “Moon Knight”, “Caliban”, “The Wicked + The Divine”, “Starlight”, “Silver Surfer” and “MPH” were in my list. However, in the end, I decided to choose “The Autumnlands: Tooth & Claw” as the Best New Series. Kurt Busiek has created a magical and fascinating new world.

The Last Temptation” is an unsung masterpiece. So I’m grateful to see Dynamite giving it the deluxe treatment it deserves. Without a shadow of a doubt, “The Last Temptation” gets the prize for Best Archival Collection / Reprint. This is one edition that I’ll treasure forever.

“This doesn’t bode well for Vertigo”, became a recurring phrase right after the departure of Karen Berger. Nevertheless, Vertigo has prospered beyond the pessimistic augurs of 2012. Some of my favorite titles such as “Sandman Overture”, “The Unwritten”, “The Wake” and “Astro City” come from this imprint. So that’s why I’m going against the trend and giving Vertigo the recognition it has earned as Best Publisher.
Dave McKean

I have posted there daily since 2009, making good friends in the process. I’ve laughed out loud with their whimsical and politically incorrect articles. I’ve supported their initiatives and I have celebrated their message boards for the past 5 years. I’m talking, of course, about TheOuthousers.com simply put: the Best Comics - Related Webpage!

“Ars longa, vita brevis” goes an old Latin saying. Art, indeed, can be everlasting even if our lives are doomed to end. In 2014 we say goodbye to several prominent creators: Steve Moore, a very respected British author, and a mentor for legendary writer Alan Moore. I’m familiar with Steve Moore’s stories for “2000AD”, and I was truly saddened when I read in the news that he was gone. Dick Ayers, was a very popular name in the silver age, he was famous for his work in the early days of Marvel Comics and was inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 2007. Finally, Jeremy Dale was the creator of the acclaimed title “Skyward” and a collaborator in “G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero”. Fans and followers were devastated when they found out that Jeremy was only 34 years old when he passed away.

I started this post explaining how I methodically and carefully choose what comics I get each month. However, no methodology can be 100% effective, so every now and then I get really bad comic books in my list. Reading “Avengers & X-Men: Axis” was a complete waste of my time (it’s hard to believe that the same Remender who wrote “Uncanny Avengers” also wrote this rubbish). This narrative disaster also has the ugliest drawings I’ve seen from Adam Kubert in decades. This was really the worst title of the year. The worst first issue also comes from Marvel, I’m talking about Winter Soldier: Bitter March # 1. Boring and with awful pencils, not even the cover saves this one. And the most disappointing project would be “Conan: People of the Black Circle”. This is the second time that a Dark Horse Conan title lets me down. Maybe it’s because I grew up reading Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith’s run on “Conan the Barbarian”, but the thing is that every time I try to get into Conan’s new material I find it absolutely abysmal.

And thus 2014 cometh to an end. Speak, speak now, reader. If thou art not as unkind as a Vaudeville villain then, by all means, unsheathe thy tongue. Thou shall not be arrested by modestly discourse, come forth and pray tell us what is on thy mind lest you wish to incur in the wrath of the keeper of this tavern, ensconced in yonder and ethereal realms.

I bid thee farewell and long live the ninth art!

Títulos tan llamativos como “Dead Boy Detectives”, “All-New Invaders”, “Loki: Agent of Asgard”, “Deadly Class”, “Moon Knight”, “Caliban”, “The Wicked + The Divine”, “Starlight”, “Silver Surfer” y “MPH” estaban en mi lista.
my drawing (final version) / mi dibujo (versión final)

The Last Temptation” es una obra maestra poco conocida.

Joe: A Real American Hero”.

Y el proyecto más decepcionante sería “Conan: People of the Black Circle”.

What a fantastic month for comic books! I loved the Bojeffries Saga GN, I had been wanting to read it for years and now that I did, I must say it lived up to my expectations and in fact surpassed them. I’m quite satisfied with the first issues of All New Invaders and New Warriors (part, as you may have guessed, of All New Marvel Now). Since I no longer buy The Walking Dead I was very relieved to get my fix of zombie thrills in George A. Romero’s Empire of the Dead. Image’s Deadly Class #1 was quite an interesting first chapter and with great art. Miracleman continues to surprise me not only because it’s one of the best Alan Moore runs but also due to the high quality of Marvel’s edition. And this month I have a tie for best single issues (printed in 2014): Unwritten Apocalypse #1 and Thor God of Thunder #18 (Das Pastoras is the best!). Truly extraordinary issues. And now, without further ado, here are February comics as per solicitations.

ALL NEW INVADERS #1
(W) James Robinson (A) Steve Pugh (CA) Mukesh Singh 'GODS AND SOLDIERS' PART ONE • Eisner Award winner James Robinson (STARMAN, EARTH 2) returns to MARVEL, uniting with Steve Pugh (ANIMAL MAN, HOTWIRE, GEN-X) to create a unique, modern day take on the INVADERS. • The KREE EMPIRE intends to conquer the universe using a weapon that will grant them an army of NORSE GODS. • It falls to four heroes united by their past-CAPTAIN AMERICA, NAMOR, THE ORIGINAL HUMAN TORCH and the WINTER SOLDIER-who must now face the future and wage war against the Kree to save Earth.

ALL NEW X-FACTOR #2
(W) Peter David (A) Carmine Di Giandomenico (CA) Jared K. Fletcher. 'NOT BRAND X' Part 2 X-FACTOR IS BACK…LIKE NEVER BEFORE! Serval Industries, one of the world's most trusted names in electronics and leader in cutting-edge internet and weapons technology, has just unveiled their newest contribution to society…the All-New X-Factor. Led by mutant mistress of magnetism, Polaris, the team uses its corporate backing for the betterment of society. With her half-brother Quicksilver, notorious thief, Gambit, and more by her side, can Polaris trust that her corporate masters really have good intentions?

BOJEFFRIES SAGA GN (MR) (C: 1-0-2)
(W) Alan Moore (A/CA) Steve Parkhouse. Jobremus Bojeffries is like any other father - trying to keep the peace in a house stuffed with two kids (Ginda and Reth), uncles Raoul and Festus, a baby and old Grandpa Podlasp. Never mind that one's a werewolf, one's a vampire, Grandpa is in the last stages of organic matter, and the baby puts off enough thermonuclear energy to power England and Wales. All right, they're no ordinary family. And this is no ordinary book, with stories spanning decades, a whole chapter written as light opera, a Christmas episode, and an all-new 24-page comic bringing the Bojeffries up to the present day. On every page, the wry and anarchic creativity of the creators shines through: Alan Moore's affectionate and penetrating grasp of human nature (and British culture) creates a kind of desperate poignancy in the characters, brought to memorable life by Steve Parkhouse's deft and articulate line work. It's all there, untutored, unpolished, ramshackle and always on the edge of collapse.

DEADLY CLASS #1 (MR)
(W) Rick Remender (A/CA) Wesley Craig, Lee Loughridge. It's 1987. Marcus Lopez hates school. His grades suck. He has no money. The jocks are hassling his friends. He can't focus in class, thanks to his mind constantly drifting to the stunning girl in the front row and the Dag Nasty show he has tickets to. But the jocks are the children of Joseph Stalin's top assassin, the teachers are members of an ancient league of assassins, the class he's failing is 'Dismemberment 101,' and his crush, a member of the most notorious crime syndicate in Japan, has a double-digit body count. Welcome to the most brutal high school on Earth, where the world's top crime families send the next generation of assassins to be trained. Murder is an art. Killing is a craft. At King's Dominion High School for the Deadly Arts, the dagger in your back isn't always metaphorical, nor is your fellow classmates' poison. Join writer RICK REMENDER with rising star WESLEY CRAIG (Batman) and legendary colorist LEE LOUGHRIDGE (Fear Agent) to reminisce about the mid-1980s underground through the eyes of the most damaged and dangerous teenagers on Earth.

DEADPOOL GAUNTLET #1
Deadpool has tangled with vampires before, but is he ready…to work for them?! • Dracula has a very important package he needs delivered safely, so he hires the Merc with the Mouth to get the job done!

GEORGE ROMEROS EMPIRE OF DEAD ACT ONE #1 (OF 5)
(W) George A. Romero (A/CA) Alex Maleev ZOMBIE GODFATHER GEORGE ROMERO UNLEASHES HIS NEXT UNDEAD EPIC-AS AN ALL-NEW MARVEL COMIC! • Welcome to New York City years after the undead plague has erupted-but just because Manhattan has been quarantined, don't think that everyone inside is safe! • Not only do flesh-eaters roam within Manhattan, but there's another ancient predator about to take a bite out of the Big Apple! • Plus: It's a terrorizing team-up in variant cover form when the Zombie Godfather unites with the Zombie King - Arthur Suydam!

KICK-ASS 3 #6 (OF 8) (MR)
(W) Mark Millar (A/CA) John Romita. It's the flashback issue you've all been waiting for: The secret origin of Hit-Girl! Training, first blood, and of course, lots of hugs and positive reinforcement from Big Daddy. Exactly how does little Mindy McCready earn her assassin stripes? Hint: It ain't by collecting stickers. This issue will be extra-sized for extra awesome!

NEW WARRIORS #1
(W) Christopher Yost (A) Marcus To (CA) Ramon K. Perez. WARRIORS REBORN! Adventurers SPEEDBALL and JUSTICE have come together with a group of young heroes including NOVA, SUN GIRL, and HUMMINGBIRD (and even a couple of new faces) to stop the latest threat to the Marvel Universe-the Atlanteans, Inhumans, clones and hundreds of other so-called 'superior' beings are living among the humans of the Marvel Universe, but not everyone is pleased about it. THE HIGH EVOLUTIONARY has raised an army to combat the evolution of humanity - and the New Warriors are locked in his sights!

Estoy bastante satisfecho con los primeros números de All New Invaders y New Warriors (parte, como habrán adivinado, de All New Marvel Now).

ALL NEW INVADERS #1

ALL NEW X-FACTOR #2

GEORGE ROMEROS EMPIRE OF DEAD ACT ONE #1 (OF 5)
my drawing / mi dibujo

KICK-ASS 3 #6 (OF 8) (MR)

NEW WARRIORS #1

SIDEKICK #5 CVR A MANDRAKE & HIFI (MR)

THOR GOD OF THUNDER #18
